Ortega’s rise to summit of the ultra-rich list is an inspirational one. He started out as a delivery boy for a local clothing store in the city of Coruna, Spain at just 14 and before long set up his own workshop, making nightgowns, lingerie and babywear. He opened the first Zara store in 1975, and since then has grown at an incredible rate. Ortega was actually briefly the world’s richest man in 2015, as the stock price of Microsoft fell briefly (it soon recovered within a couple of hours), something which was hailed in Spain as a milestone.

Ortega is notoriously private – he never gives interviews, and it’s very rare that you will see him interviewed; even when his company went public, he was nowhere to be seen. He, like many of the billionaires right at the top of the rich list, live a modest lifestyle. Ortega is said to consult with shop assistants for advice, and he still eats lunch with his employees in the company cafeteria.
